Commy leaves his office for the day to check the progress of his workers. Handy struggles to grab a bucket with his nubs, Cole aimlessly digs up the ground, and Lazy is slacking off. Angered, Commy gives them all overtime and tells them to do better work. He is especially mad at Cole and tells him to dig up the hole before leaving.
But Cole thinks for a moment. He imagines digging up buried treasure, becoming employee of the month. Cole decides to keep digging in order to gain Commy's respect. Handy tries to warn him that he could be fired, but gets ignored.
A tunnel forms beneath the soil as Cole continues digging. Hours later, Cole pops out of the ground and finds himself in a mysterious room. Inside are stacks of gold bricks. Cole packs up handfuls of gold into a sack, when Lifty and Shifty suddenly enter the room.
Cole runs back into the tunnel carrying the sack of pre-stolen loot. Lifty and Shifty follow him. Soon they find themselves in a dark tunnel, and Cole accidentally causes a gas leak by breaking a pipe. Shifty smells the gas and Lifty foolishly lights a match to check. An explosion bursts through the ground, killing Handy in the process.
Cole plummets on the ground, wounded but alive. He sees the explosion has caused oil to come out of the ground. He cheers in joy of the luck, when Lifty's lit match falls next to him. He ends up being burnt to death.
The next morning, Commy returns and witnesses the fountain of oil. Looking around, he sees Lazy holding a shovel and believes he dug it up. Thus, he proudly gives Lazy the honor of being employee of the month. Then he sees Cole lying on the ground and gets upset with him for sleeping on the job, oblivious that he is dead.
Deaths[]
